What are the Basic Taoist Beliefs?
By Bobba
Tao (Path or Way)
The Tao (pronounced "dow" as in 'Dow Jones') is the organic pattern of Nature and the Universe. We follow this pattern by following our own true nature. Life becomes harmonious and effortless when we follow the Tao.

Te (Virtue)
Te (pronounced "deh") is the gentle unassuming intelligence of Nature. It is also the virtue obtained by one who is living in harmony with the Tao.

The Three Jewels
Compassion: The ability to see things from the perspective of all other life forms, both human and non-human.

Moderation: Extreme views and extreme actions should always be avoided. The middle way should always be favoured.

Humility: Self-interest and self-importance are self-destructive.

Wu Wei (Not Forcing)
(Pronounced "woo way".) Flexibility and suppleness are superior to strength and rigidity. The more one acts in harmony with Nature, the more one achieves and with less effort.

P'u (The Uncarved Block)
P'u (pronounced "pooh") is returning to your true self by disregarding negative social influences. Be guided by what you feel and not social expectations.

Detachment (Letting Go)
Allowing the moment to pass without regret, opinion or judgement.

Yin-Yang (Natural Balance)
It is not possible to have winning without losing; good without evil; health without illness; or life without death. In all things there must be balance.

Oneness (A Connection to All Things)
Oneness is when the hallucination of a separate self is overcome and an individual feels one with Nature and all things.

Tzu-Jan (Spontaneity)
(Pronounced "zi-run".) Not planning and simply trusting the flow of life. Experiencing freedom from anxiety by trusting the processes of Nature.
